Fractional vs interim vs part-time vs outsourced CMO

By Jay Rockliffe · Published

A fractional CMO leads your marketing for a few days each month on an ongoing basis. An interim CMO steps in full time for a defined period, usually to cover a gap. A part-time CMO is typically an employee on reduced hours. An outsourced CMO is a firm that supplies marketing leadership as a service. Pick by the problem you have, not by the title.

Why the titles get confusing

Buyers search for all four, and many providers use them interchangeably. The differences are real, though, and they show up in three places: how much of the person's time you get, how long they stay, and who they actually work for.

Side by side

Fractional CMO Interim CMO Part-time CMO Outsourced CMO
Time A few days each month Full time Fixed reduced hours Varies by contract
Length Ongoing, quarter to quarter Fixed term, often months Ongoing Ongoing
Works for Several companies at once Usually just you Usually just you A firm, serving many clients
Best for Growth companies that need senior direction, not a full-time seat Covering a departure, a turnaround or a big launch Companies that want an employee, on fewer hours Companies that want leadership plus an execution team in one contract
Watch out for Too few hours for the scope Paying full-time rates for a short stay Hard to find senior talent on part-time pay Leadership that is thin while the firm sells execution

Fractional CMO

The fractional model is built for companies that need a senior marketing owner but not 40 hours a week of one. You get the judgment, the plan and the accountability, and your own team or agencies handle the production. It scales up or down with the business. Most of my engagements run this way. I explain the role in more depth in What is a fractional CMO.

Interim CMO

An interim CMO is a full-time executive for a set period. The classic case is a CMO who leaves mid-year with a launch on the calendar. The interim keeps the team moving, makes the decisions that cannot wait, and often helps hire the permanent replacement. It is more intense and usually more expensive per month than fractional, but it is designed to end.

Part-time CMO

Part-time usually means an employee with fewer hours, on payroll, often for one company. It works when you have found the right person and they want a reduced schedule. It is harder to make work when you are trying to buy senior experience at a part-time salary.

Outsourced CMO

An outsourced CMO comes from a firm or agency that bundles leadership with execution. It can be efficient if you want one contract for everything. Check who actually sets strategy and how many hours of senior time you really get, because the incentive is to sell the execution. I founded and ran an agency, IdealMinds, from 2004 to 2012 and grew it to $10M in revenue, so I have sat on that side of the table.

Fractional marketing director vs fractional CMO

A fractional marketing director usually runs programs and campaigns. A fractional CMO owns the strategy, the budget and the revenue outcome, and sits with the leadership team. If you need someone to run the plan, a director may be enough. If you need someone to write the plan and answer for the number, you need a CMO.

Fractional CMO vs full-time CMO

Go full time when marketing is complex enough to need a senior leader every day, the team is large, and you can afford the salary, equity and the cost of a wrong hire. Until then, a fractional CMO gets you most of the value for a fraction of the commitment, and can help you hire the full-time leader when the time comes.

How to choose in one minute

  • A leader just left and something big is due: interim.
  • Nobody senior owns marketing, and you are not ready for a full-time executive: fractional.
  • You want an employee on reduced hours: part-time.
  • You want strategy and execution from one firm: outsourced, with eyes open.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a fractional CMO and an interim CMO?

A fractional CMO works a few days each month on an ongoing basis, often for several companies. An interim CMO works full time for a defined period, usually to cover a gap or lead through a specific event.

Is a part-time CMO the same as a fractional CMO?

Not quite. Part-time usually means an employee on reduced hours for one company. Fractional usually means an independent executive serving a few companies, engaged on a monthly basis.

What is an outsourced CMO?

A marketing leadership service supplied by a firm, often bundled with that firm's execution team. Ask how much senior time you actually get.

When should I hire a full-time CMO instead?

When marketing needs a senior leader every day, the team is large, and the business can carry the full cost of the role. Many companies use a fractional CMO first and hire full time later.
